A
Little Bit of History...
|
Brunswick Nurseries was incorporated in 1976.During that
year the nursery was mapped out and planting began; slowly
at first with just a few acres. The Garden Centre opened during
the spring of 1981, with 2 employees, a tiny (150sq.ft) sales
office and a display area for ornamental trees & shrubs,
featuring plants grown at our own nursery & imported.

The company began landscaping in 1983, with a ½ ton
truck and a crew of 2.Growth has been slow & steady, reaching
present day levels of 12 acres under cultivation, as many
as 30 employess during the peak season, & 4 vehicles designated
for landscaping. What began as a small nursery that had a
tiny retail outlet, has become a multi-faceted green industry
company, with one of the largest displays of ornamental plants
in New Brunswick.
Brunswick Nurseries has always been interested in finding
new (& sometimes better) ways of doing things. We feel
very strongly that our garden centre is unique & innovative.
To help achieve those ends, we travel far & wide, looking
at new ideas & bringing them home. Several members of
our staff have visited gardens, nurseries & garden centres
in England, Holland, Ontario & the US, as well as attending
a multitude of seminars and workshops.

We were
brave enough to implement our own style of common sense farming
methods in our nursery. We no longer use herbicides, chemical
fertilizers, insecticides or fungicides in our fields. Instead
we rotate crops of green manures, incorporate compost that we
collect from yard waste |

& our animal farm, and topdress with fish fertilizers
& lime. Other techniques involve selecting resistant varieties
of stock, practicing manual weed control (remember the hoe?).
A lot of these techniques are not considered modern, but they
do go a long way to protect our resources, and to put people
to work, something we feel is very important.
We are proud of what we do, and the industry we work in. It's
evident in the people we hire, the work we do, the children
we teach, and the fact we are active in industry Asssociation
(NB Hort Trades Association) work. In fact to quote friend and
colleague Kirk Brown, who is based in Pennsylvania "what
other profession has the privilege of doing God's handiwork?"
I would encourage you to come out and see all this first hand.
