Shrub beds are our specialty. I like to create them under large existing trees in the lawn, which takes care of the unsightly lower branches and the bumpy, hard to mow stump areas, and gives a mature look to the new bed because of the large trunks.

The shrubs go in first, to create the structure of the bed, then perennials in groupings fill the open areas to give colour and texture. Boulders can be added to give year-round impact to the bed. |

These are the four main groups of plants I like to combine in a large bed to achieve variety, sustained colour, and year-round appeal.
